            bell ringer Hickam had to belabor many obstacles to get to where he treasured to be. He had to effect around his paternitys expectations for him to work in the mines. He had to push past his brothers shadow to create his own legacy. Finally he had to overcome the expectations of growing up and working in the mines of Coalwood westward Virginia.

             nates is the manger so to speak of the Coalwood mine. He is a tricky man with expectations for bell ringer to work in the mines and to grow up the same way as he did. He doesnt like the fact that homing pigeon is an exception to the other battalion in Coalwood. Homer doesnt really think that his father c ares near him or what he does with his rockets. He finds his father does care about him and what he does by two things that happened. First, when Homer and his friends are construction the launch pad, he asks his papa for some cement to use for the base. At first his father says no and then tells him at that place is some cement left over from a new driveway the company just built. Second, his father comes to watch Homer and the Rocket Boys last rocket, Homer lets his dad push the button to launch the last rocket.





            Jim is Homers star football player brother. He is the town patron; he gets the girls and is one of the team captains. He looks out for Homer but does so without letting Homer or his family go to protect his football/tough guy reputation. In the movie Jim receives a scholarship to play football at the University of West Virginia at the same time Homer and his father are in the midst of their rivalry. John is very proud of Jim. Homer finds that his brother also cares about him in a various way that is a little bit harder to pick out than his father.
