This book was written by Marie Raphael and published in 2001. It is partly fiction, but there are some historical facts around immigrants and Ellis Island. This story is about a Typical Polish family that hold back to immigrate to America, fleeing Poland in fear, in order to set down out from czars soldiers. Stephan, the son, does not mind participating, but his family does not want him to. He is forced to anyways, and they know for sure that he would be put in jail, and maybe even scenery if he doesnt. Five months later, Stephan escapes and meets up with his family once again and they entirely leave.
When they get to Ellis Island, Katrina is denied and has to go back to Germany with her parents. This Polish family, made up of Marisia(daughter), Stephan(son), Katrina(youngest daughter), Adam(youngest son) and their parents. They suit a long journey to Ellis Island. If they weart leave now, then they know for sure that Stephan would be in danger. When Marisia and the family arrive at Ellis Island, her younger sibling, Katrina is turned away because she has been diagnosed with tuberculosis. Her and her parents are denied and are forced to return to Germany, meaning that Marisia and Stephan have to face this country on their own. It isnt easy, especially when youre 15, care Marisia.
This story takes roll in many places. In the descent of this book, the setting was in Poland. Then, soon the setting is taken place in New York, or Ellis island. It is told that in America, the streets are surface in gold, hence the title of this book. Marisia and Stephan struggle to find a home. People would reply Sorry, I know youre trouble, and we dont want trouble in our home. or We cannistert, we dont have enough room for you.. They were always judged because of who they were, and that they were Polish.
