In the 1930s, a man by the name of Alfred Woelbing actual a back talk balm for lip protection which he called Lyptone. He sold his Lyptone formula for $2,500 to a New Jersey companionship in 1937. Woelbing then developed a silver polish that he called Shynebright on a hot plate in the basement of his own home office in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Woelbing suffered from moth-eaten sores and began to concoct a home let off for these cold sores. Using his hot plate, he heated the by-line items in a saucepan: menthol, camphor, phenol, lanolin, cocoa butter, salicylic acid, vitamin E, shea butter, and petroleum jelly. Once the ingredients were resolve down and mixed together, he would poor the concoction into a glass jar where it would congeal. Woelbing put this remedy on his cold sores, and was successful in curing them. Thinking like the entrepreneur that he was, Woelbing went to pharmacies all over Milwaukee and Chicago selling his product. race began to buy the product and it became an immediate local success. Alfred and his wife began qualification more and more of the remedy and made sales calls in Wisconsin, Illinois, and some locations in Indiana. Alfred incorporated his business as Carma Laboratories in 1937 and decided to call his product Carmex.



He and his wife continue making Carmex in their basement and selling it out of the system of their car until 1973, when their son, Don, joined the business. Don introduced Carma Laboratories to a new rented induction in Wauwatosa, WI, and used the assembly line method of production. In 1976, Carma Laboratories outgrew their facility in Wauwatosa and moved to a new milling machinery in Franklin, Wisconsin, where the business remains today. Alfred Woelbing continued to be hot seat of Carma Laboratories until his death in 2001 at the age of 100. His grandsons-Paul and Eric- began running the caller-up upon his death, and continue to be in charge today.
