The Things They Carried

One of my favorite selections I baffle read this shape and likewise chose to write my first essay on was Tim OBriens The Things they carried. I really enjoyed reading that selection because in my eyes it was a romance novel and I am a hopeless romantic. However when it came time to write a paper on it that task became different and it is even more difficult now trying to analyze this piece of naturalise with critical approaches.
As I go back and polish up the story I could closely identify the selection with formalist and fab criticism. One of the reasons the formalist approach fits this story is due to how good the elements r for each one together to give the reader(s) a total experience. The way OBrien used the tone of Lieutenant Cross to identify the splendour of everyones personal belonging that they had chosen to carry with them and the treasure of each distributor point set the imagery of the story. The personality and emotions of each individual solider were made vivid through their choice of item to carry around with them through life and death situations. The reply Lieutenant Cross experienced after the death of his partner Ted Lavender also proves the formalist approach in this story. The whole system in my opinion proved his work as a great piece of art.




The psychological approach in this succinct story is also very clear in this novel. world as through over the past decade we have really gotten a vivid picture of war and the soldiers who excite in the war we can identify some of the events in this story as realistic. The realistic actions are identified by the importance of gifts received by loved ones which were identified through Marthas gifts. The gifts Martha would send Lt Cross were so valuable because it gave him a sense of home which he had non seen in a long time and in reality may not ever see again. These simple presents from Martha motivated Lt.
