(SL 480) Hemingways ambitionâ€"to encompass a new level of understandingâ€"is echoed in the novel by dint of and through the ceaselessly questing mind of Robert Jordan, a former professor who, we are told, once wrote a book about Spain, and plans to write some other: He would write a book when he got through with this. But only about the things he knew, truly, and about what he knew. But I will have to be a much better writer than I am without delay to handle them, he thought.
